Get better at understanding Polish!

17 Oct

If you haven’t got an opportunity to listen to native Polish speakers, it’s a great idea to go to the cinema and watch a Polish film! Luckily for us in the North East, Odeon regularly provides us with a chance to improve our listening and comprehension skills.

You can sometimes watch films set in Poland (like the recent film ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’ by Niki Caro or ‘Walesa: Man of Hope’ by Andrzej Wajda) that will give you an understanding of certain aspects of life in Poland. Even better than this is when you can see a Polish film that has been filmed with Polish actors… in Poland.

This time, Odeon cinemas are screening ‘Botox’ (in Polish ‘Botoks’) by Patryk Vega. Inspired by real events, it tells the story of four women who are going through a crisis. All of them are medical professionals (a surgeon, a gynaecologist, an emergency doctor and a pharmaceutical rep) and face stress and pressure related to their careers and personal lives. The film is quite gory and full of moments that make you turn away from the screen, but it shows the problems facing the Polish NHS and addresses important issues everywhere else too.

For more details, check the Odeon website for their Metrocentre and Silverlink cinemas.

“The biggest waste of my time was waiting around for someone to fulfil me. I won’t look for validation from men any more. Only I can make my life meaningful. No one else can do it.”

Polish films in British cinemas

21 May

Our local news website Polnews informed us that we have another chance to watch a Polish film in British cinemas. This time it’s a romantic comedy with Maciej Stuhr called “Planeta singli” (“The planet of singles”).planet singli

What is it about?

He is one of the top celebrities in the country: a fast-talking TV host, who can joke his way out of any situation. Women want to be with him, men want to be like him. He is looking for a new topic to discuss in his popular talk-show. She is a teacher at a musical school – a timid girl looking for Mr. Perfect on an internet dating site. He will help her realise her potential and teach her how to recognise various types of men for what they are, she will teach him what real life is about. The show will become a huge hit. It seems they are destined to fall in love and be together, but one day she actually does meet Mr. Perfect on the net. (source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5127398/)

Watching movies helps you learn Polish. It’s useful because you get to hear lots of slang and cool expressions – it’s how people really talk. Also, you should be able to enjoy it, having visual clues to aid your understanding, even if you don’t understand every last thing the characters are saying.

Enjoy!
